Under $200
In the under $200 range you have many personal, home business and very small business accounting packages which contain the essentials for everyday accounting.
Microsoft Money
Retailing at $80, Microsoft Money is easy to use and comes with excellent documentation. It has above average accounts receivable and payable functions, very good inventory and banking features but does lack on the time billing and fixed assets side of things. Still for $80 is a good choice for small business without complicated finances.
Quicken Accounting 2008 Deluxe
A simple and basic accounting software package. Retails for under $100 so is therefore really only suitable for the small home business or for personal and family finances. A good choice for basic account keeping.
$200-$400
This range contains most of the mid range accounting software programs that most small to medium businesses would use.
Peachtree Complete
$265 is the cost of this software and it is worth every cent. It does every function you would need and in fact does a little more than Cougar and the other expensive packages. This software has received top ratings everywhere. Well worth a look for the small or medium business.
MYOB Business Essentials Pro
A strong competitor to Peachtree Complete but lacking a few of the same features such as fixed asset management. At $300 it is also more expensive than Peachtree but if you are already familiar with MYOB then you can’t go wrong with this one.
$400+
If you are spending over $400 on accounting software then chances are you are pretty serious about your business finances. This is why we have included titles which cost over $1000 in this category as well as people spending over $400 probably have an open budget.
Cougar Mountain
Costing $1500, this is a serious bit of kit. It can really do everything perfect besides time billing and fixed assets. This software is amazing and an excellent choice for larger businesses.
NetSuite Small Business Accounting
Costing around $1200 this is a high end solution. It beats Cougar as it does everything very well and only misses out on fixed assets management.
